Interview with Vahid Esfandiari, the Sales Manager of Farabi Cinema Foundation
Film Festivals are the best place to present Short Films

As someone who has been working in film sales and marketing for years, what do you think about international market’s standards for distributing a film?
I do not see any problem in marketing for Iranian films. These films have special markets, because they have special audiences. buyers or T.V. channels are looking for thoughtfully and artistic cinema, and Iranian films. Because of the contents of films, which they find interesting, but technically, we cannot rival with mainstream cinema.
What is the situation of short film marketing internationally?
In one side, there are viewers, who never go to theatres to see short films. I think the international film festivals are the best place to present films, because there are always some buyers who are looking for the right of films. In other word, it is a free marketing for films. In addition, many of film festivals have their own film markets that are suitable for presenting short films.
Do you believe it is not necessary to do marketing for short films like what private companies do for feature films?
Of course, it is necessary, but I think it involves expenses for a short film producer, which is not profitable economically.
It seems that in recent years, the short film marketing has weakened, do you feel the same thing in feature film area?
In Farabi Cinema Foundation, we have adopted new ways for introducing and advertising our films, for instance, we present the films by Internet.
Is Farabi Cinema Foundation active in short film marketing?
We were doing this before, but now, the Iranian Young Cinema Society is responsible for short film marketing and it acts well, so Farabi is more concentrated on feature films.
